MARIA'S MUSINGS

Below are the Newsletter subscribers' favourite childhood memories of winter:

1. Colleen: A warm, sunny window seat. Can’t move from it because it’s too cold everywhere else.

2. Cheryl C: My favourite memory is my mom’s beef stew with dumplings. Very yummy.

3. Michelle D: My favourite winter memory was sitting in front of the fire with my family and listening to Squad Cars on Springbok Radio. Warm and cosy.

4.Theresa: Sitting around the old cylindrical-shaped paraffin heater, burning our toes on the bottom ledge.

5. Jenny L: Being able to get dressed in front of the Esse heater in the morning, after laying out my school uniform in front of the fire to warm up.

6. Joanne: Warming my clothes on the Esse fireplace.

7. Selma: Playing in the dry “mielieblare” at harvest time with all my nieces, nephews and sisters. At bath time Mom would rub camphor cream into those tiny scratches that would burn like fiery pokers.

8. Paula: I remember my mom making melkkos on a Sunday evening in the heart of winter.  It smelled of cinnamon and brown sugar but tasted of her love for us.

9. Chris: My childhood memory … tripe and samp. Sometimes I make it. Very nice.

10. Mienie: My favourite memory is of the snow in 1981. I was in Grade 3.  It was the first time we’d seen snow, so we all ran outside and played in the snow. The teachers could do nothing to get us back into the classroom.

11. Erica K: Freshly baked home-made bread and vetkoeke in the morning. My mother started baking at 3am to have it ready for school with home-made apricot or sliced peach jam.  Yum-yum …

12. Nellie: My mom’s “boontjiesop”.

13. Jenny H: Sitting in front of the fire in the lounge with siblings and being treated with toasting marshmallows.

14.John: The magical winter wonderland of the snow-covered neighbourhood.

15. Beatrijs: My mom stoking the anthracite heater every morning so that the fire would keep going all winter and heat the rest of the house. Sometimes she would put the Belgian waffle dough on the stove to rise and we’d all tuck into the waffles later with icing sugar sprinkled on top.

16. Michelle Hunter: Sleeping on Ouma’s little stoep at her old house. Also, warming ourselves next to our oil heater, and slurping hot soup from our special bowls.

17 Geraldine: My favourite childhood memory of winter is my mom’s delicious chicken soup with lots of barley.

18. Maria: A red corduroy dress with tight sleeves and a large collar, that I wore to church. It didn’t really keep me warm, but I loved that little dress!
