MARIA'S MUSINGS

THE LOVELY STORY OF ONE COUPLE, TWO WEDDING VENUES & THREE WEDDING CAKES

ONE COUPLE
At a time when I was going through the lowest and darkest period in my life, I asked God to send me a helpmate, someone I could love and respect and who would cherish me in return. Little did I know that before John and I even met, God was preparing a way for us to meet, fall in love and get married.

I met John at a lovely little folk club called TJs in Milpark in about 1995. I was still singing and playing guitar in those days and often did a set there. John was in the audience and used to look at me with moon-pie eyes while I sang. I, on the other hand, used to wait for his dessert to be served and then stole the cherry off his ice-cream.

Then, in 2001 I was booked to sing at TJs, but unfortunately – or should I say, fortunately - I fractured my elbow, so had to find someone to accompany me on the guitar. That “someone” was John. On 19th of May 2001, at our first rehearsal, it was LOVE AT FIRST KISS.

Now those of you who knew John well, would know that he was not a man to rush into anything, so it was only 11 years later that we got married and he’d finally found the perfect house for us with the perfect studio for me. Believe me, it was worth the wait. God sent John into my life to help heal me and protect me. His gentle spirit, dependable and practical nature, sharp intellect and deep love for me broke down my walls, and in the process, I grew closer to God and my faith was restored.

THE TWO WEDDING VENUES
We had two wedding ceremonies: one in South Africa for our friends and my family, and two weeks later, one in the UK for John’s UK family and friends.

THREE WEDDING CAKES
Carrot cake for me, chocolate cake for John (of course), and a lovely English vanilla sponge for us.

So, the story of one couple, two venues and three cakes is really a metaphor for our lives together: Cherishing what we had in common, respecting each other’s past, and celebrating our differences. I cannot imagine how the next chapter in the story will unfold without my beloved John, the hero of my story, but I do know that God has a plan for me and in quietness and trust shall be my strength.

“At my lowest, God is my hope
At my weakest, God is my strength
At my saddest God is my comfort”
