MARIA'S MUSINGS

See You Next Year, Summer!

Have you noticed how bright the moon has been lately? On 6/7 March we experienced what is known as the Harvest Moon, the first full moon before the Autumn Equinox.  In the Southern Hemisphere the Autumn equinox will occur on 20 March this year. Daylight will be roughly equal to night-time, and then gradually the nights will get longer, and the days will get shorter: a sure sign that Old Man Winter is on his way!

The Harvest Moon is so named because in days gone by the very bright light from the moon helped the farmers get their crops harvested late into the night. During March the harvesting of various summer grains is in full swing in South Africa although some might already be finished.

While doing research on this topic I stumbled on this interesting nugget in Leviticus 32:22

"When you reap the harvest of your land, moreover, you shall not reap to the very corners of your field nor gather the gleaning of your harvest; you are to leave them for the needy and the alien. I am the Lord your God.”

How cool is that?
